Relic of Light

Clear

It should have been a simple task—help a friend search the Avons Antiquary Society for records pertaining to an ancient curse. Thea Darrington doesn’t expect any trouble, except perhaps from the rigid, staid president of the society. That young upstart she can manage. After all, she handled his predecessor back when she became the first woman admitted to the society.

Yet when she encounters a peculiar stranger lurking in the quiet chambers, one whose actions demand investigation, it upends all her plans. Regardless of the danger, Thea can’t ignore a possible threat to her beloved society. After all, no proper antiquarian shrinks back from a quest for answers.

When the powers that be dismiss her concerns, she takes matters into her own hands. Never mind her advanced years and failing frame, she has determination enough to stand against whatever nefarious plans this individual may have. Or so she hopes…

This novelette takes place concurrently with Ruins of Bone, book two in the Blood of the Fae series. While a self-contained story, it assumes prior knowledge of the Blood of the Fae world.

Thea Darrington is spurred into action to help her friend Ibbie’s protege Jessa Caldwell. Miss Caldwell had asked for some help on the mysterious Kilmere that was given to her by Ibbie but had been unable to do so while Jessa was in town. Now that her old bones are feeling better, but not what they used to mind you, she promised she would forward information to her through Mr. Tibbons. While at the Antiquity Society she notices some odd behavior and attempts to bring it to the president’s attention. Being dismissed due to her age and gender, Mrs. Darrington decides to take matters into her own hands.

A fun filler piece while we wait for the next installment of the series. This short story takes place during Ruins of Bone and is set in the perspective of a minor character we are introduced to. We see a familiar face in the story as well. I am absolutely sure this sets up events that are to happen in Binding of Silver and am excited to see how these connect. A fun, quick read for a fan of the series.
