Shades of Obsidian is everything I could have hoped for as the fifth installment in Blood of the Fae. As with all books in the series, the focus on character emotions and relationships is balanced with details, an immediate plot, and the mystery of the overarching plot, all wrapped up in one beautifully written package.
This book sees a significant amount of character growth for both the main and supporting cast, a mix of laugh-out-loud humour and tension-inducing scenes, and is possibly the first book where we start getting some answers(!). I definitely kicked my chair in excitement and cackled in satisfaction at certain points.
As with all of the series, it somehow retains a tone of gentle comfort, despite its sometimes dark complexity. Shades of Obsidian is easily one of my top 5 books for 2026 (alongside book 4 in the series), and I can’t recommend it enough.
The death hunt has been called on Jessa. None are known to survive once someone hears it whispering their name. However, those who called the hunt never expected Riven to step in and protect her. In doing so, he becomes gravely injured. Jessa will do anything to save him, even accept a bargain she knows is a trap. She has been told her emotions and her heart will be her downfall but she won’t accept losing him. Talon, monarch to the Court of Gold, does not take well that his arbiter’s life hangs in the balance. In both retaliation for Riven’s involvement and a way to get answers he seeks, he intends to use Jessa and her bargain as a way to gather sensitive information from the Court of Silver. What he tasks her with is no simple matter but will keep two courts from potentially going to war. She finds herself separated from her support while being thrust into fae politics. There are many secrets she needs to keep close as she uses what little understanding of the fae courts and their deception to complete her bargains to go home.
If you have not read the other books in the series, turn back now. Many plot pieces start to truly come into light and the start of the climax of the series can be seen. There are some much awaited answers and revelations that have been building for a while. Yes, new questions have popped up but we are finally seeing some of the people and ideas pulling the strings. The character development was good to see, at one point I said ‘good for her’ with how Jessa dealt with a situation. Some old faces are seen again while new ones are plentiful. Jade and Risha plotting was on point and Thea still continues to be my goals in old age. This installment is already on my favorites list and I go back to it for several reasons. I am absolutely looking forward to the next book and to see the journey these characters will take me.
