Binding of Silver

Clear

Lies, labyrinths . . . and lost souls?

Never bargain with the fae. The society of Byren lives by this rule, but it’s one herbalist Jessa Caldwell has broken time and again. So far, she’s escaped unscathed, but her sister Ainslie—snared in a bargain she can’t recall making—doesn’t share her good fortune.

After Ainslie vanishes into the night, Jessa fears the horrors her sister might suffer. She’s witnessed what fae do to mortals—using them as playthings to torment, even transforming them into monsters. No matter the cost, she’s resolved to find her.

But she soon learns that Ainslie isn’t the only one missing. All across the kingdom, mortals are disappearing without a trace. With the aid of fae arbiter Riven and kit-isne Jade, Jessa seeks those responsible, but as she does, her actions draw unwelcome attention from all quarters—fae and mortal alike. Even those within her own home mistrust her purposes, and she risks shattering the relationships that mean the most to her.

Yet she cannot abandon mortals to the mercies of Other. Her quest for answers takes her through the heart of a labyrinth and into the dangerous midsummer hunt of the fae, where the creature they seek could claim her life as swiftly as the fae will if they ever discover her true purpose.

She’ll need everything she’s learned about fae—and her own nature—if she’s to have any chance of surviving the maze of hidden truths and shifting loyalties around her.

Ada comes to Jessa distraught at finding Ainslie missing just after the events at Kilmere. Jessa is quickly able to figure out that the mysterious binding is the cause of the problem. While enlisting Riven’s aid in finding out who holds the binding, Ainslie reappears but clearly fae influenced and with no recollection of what happened. As the sisters come up with a plan to save Ainslie they hear news about mysterious disappearances across Byren. However, with Ainslie showing back up they aren’t sure if the two are connected. Once back in Avons, Mr. Burke has come to a stall in the missing person’s case and turns to Jessa for possible Other connections. Now Jessa is determined to solve both mysteries while hoping they aren’t connected. While she delves deeper into events she is confronted about her fae nature, her past, and the cruelties that lay in the Otherworld.

Picking up right after Ruins of Bone Jessa and her family, both blood and found, are in the path of another mystery. This poor girl just hasn’t caught a break since Tattoo of Crimson. That being said I’m not sure she would know what to do if she had a moment to breathe because she would overthink EVERYTHING. I feel this book is the start of the next chapter for Jessa as she comes to terms with her fae nature and the clash of mortal and fae values. A few themes I noticed are the idea of choices, both the ones we make for ourselves and what we want and the choices we influence for others whether by holding others back or letting them choose their own paths. The strong emotions that are powerful influencing these decisions ultimately pave the path one goes down. Jessa battles with the love for her family and the love they have for her and the fear that drives her at times causing several spectacular clashes. We get more clues to the overarching plot about the Forgotten War but there are still more questions than answers to that. She is also willfully oblivious to the budding relationship between her and Riven. There are times you can tell she clearly knows her own heart but still questions Riven, their stated friendship status, and what motivates him. Unexpectedly, I discovered a fun side character we have met previously but I truly hope to see more of. Nikol is such a troll and I am for the shenanigans he will be a part of.
